PDB Animation Tutorial (PC version) 1) Download and install the following programs: Swiss PDB Viewer - download POV-ray - download Easy GIF Animator - download (This is a trial download good for 20 uses)
2) Open your PDB using Swiss PDB Viewer and place the molecule in the desired orientation. Color the secondary structure and display the ribbon representation. Note: This tutorial will demonstrate how to rotate the molecule around the Z-axis. 3) Turn on both "Open GL Rendering" and "Render in solid 3D". 4) Save the file as a "POV scene". 5) Open the new .pov file in POV-Ray 6) Scroll toward the bottom of the text and find the "Objects" line. (Note: the quickest way to find this line is to press Ctrl+F and type objects.)

8) The following lighting conditions work very nicely, but experiment with the intensity and position values.
9) Change the POVRAY.INI file to instruct POV-Ray to collect 100 images. You can open the povray.ini file by clicking Tools → Edit master POVRAY.INI. The bottom of this page should contain the following statement. (Note: This number can be changed to anything you want. Keep in mind it takes a while to process each image.)
Either enter this information manually or copy and paste the test from this .ini file into yours. Sample povray.ini 10) Save the povray.ini file. 11) Start the program by pressing the Run button.
12) Depending on the speed of your computer and the size of the image, processing the 100 images should take no longer then 15 minutes. 13) When the rendering is complete, your folder should look something like this: 14) Open Easy GIF Animator and load the newly rendered 100 images (Frame → Insert). (Note: To select all 100 images, select a single image and then press Ctrl+A). 15) After the images are loaded, press Ctrl+P to preview the animation. 16) Your new animation can now be saved as either an animated GIF or an AVI GIF: File → Save As... AVI: File → Export to AVI...
